The Highest Bidder

Chapter one

Mary

She lived in a town called Blessed. Well, it wasn’t really called Blessed. The proper name of the town was something quite different, but Blessed was what the residents called it and Blessed was what Mary would answer when she was asked where she was from. The town gained its title after a great sickness spread through the surrounding cities. Blessed sat in the centre of the whole pandemic and had been left untouched.

The small paved streets lay yellow with the dusting that the outland insisted upon giving them. If it ever rained all the dust would turn to dirt. That would be problematic, but never actually had been an issue because it never rained. Even in the wet season the rain never touched the sky above Blessed. The residents relied upon the plumbing system, which ran from the neighbouring townships.

At the centre of the town sat a small hall used by almost everyone who lived there. On Mondays the hall was used for senior dance. On Tuesdays it was used by the school for drama clubs. On Wednesdays it was a baking school and in the evening you could learn martial arts. Fridays were the busiest day of the week because the town meeting was held.

The sound of the town’s folk chattering filled the streets long before the official starting time of the meeting. Blessed was a place of friends. It was a place where everyone knew everybody. It was a place where kids were safe to play on the streets long after dark. It was a good, wholesome place where you could expect to find a full attendance at Church on Sundays.

“You know you can’t do this,” Sophia told Mary with a worried look.

Mary looked down the pencil that she was gripping tightly. She turned it slightly over in her fingers. The worry on Sophia’s face was hard to ignore. Mary’s better side was telling her that she shouldn’t put her friend through so much anxiety, but she didn’t put down the pencil. “I have to do this,” she told Sophia firmly with apologetic eyes.

“Mary,” Sophia started.

“You don’t understand,” Mary told her, leaning over the signup sheet that was in front of her. There weren’t many names on the list, but she knew all of the names that were there. She wasn’t surprised by the names she found. “You haven’t been forced to be good all your life like me,” she put the pencil down against the paper and signed her name smoothly with a fluid motion and impeccable penmanship.

“I know that you’ve had it tough,” Sophia tried to convey her understanding. “I know that your dad is a bit difficult, but are you really going to do this to him?”

“Yes,” Mary nodded, as she pulled back from the signup sheet.”

“What about his job?” Sophia asked Mary quietly, as they walked away from the table and out of the town hall. “What are people going to say when they find out about this?”

Mary shrugged. She didn’t care what people would say.
